Hacking

Hacking in simple terms means an illegal intrusion into a computer system and/or network. Every act committed towards breaking into a computer and/or network is hacking. Hackers possess the desire to destruct and they get the kick out of such destruction. Some hackers hack for personal monetary gains, such as to stealing the credit card information, transferring money from various bank accounts to their own account followed by withdrawal of money. They extort money from some corporate giant threatening him to publish the stolen information which is critical in nature.
Government websites are the hot targets of the hackers due to the press coverage, it receives. Hackers enjoy the media coverage.

What information is required to lodge a complaint?


• If you are a victim of hacking

Bring the following information
o Server Logs
o Copy of defaced web page in soft copy as well as hard copy format, if your website is defaced
o If data is compromised on your server or computer or any other network equipment, soft copy of original data and soft copy of compromised data.
o Access control mechanism details i.e.- who had what kind of the access to the compromised system
o List of suspects – if the victim is having any suspicion on anyone.
o All relvant information leading to the answers to following questions –
 what ? (what is compromised)
 who? (who might have compromised system)
 when?(when the systme was compromised)
 why?(why the system might have been compromised)
 where?(where is the impact of attack-identifying the target system from the network)
 How many?(How many systems have been compromised by the attack)
• If your are a victim of e-mail abuse, vulgur e-mail etc.

Bring the following information-

o Extract the extended headers of offending e-mail (If you do not know how to extract header please refer to section 1 of this FAQ).
o Bring soft copy as well hard copy of offending e-mail.
o Please do not delete the offending e-mail from your e-mail box.
Please save the copy of offending e-mail on your computers hard drive.

What are e-mail headers? How to extract e-mail headers?

Most of the times the the victim do not know how to extract the headers from the e-mail. Following is the description of the extraction of e-mail headers

Hotmail

• Log into Hotmail.
• Click on "Options" tab on the top navigation bar.
• Click on the "Mail Display Settings" link.
• Change the "Message Headers" option to "Full".
• Click the "OK" button.

Yahoo Mail

• Log into your Yahoo! Mail account.
• Click the "Options" link on the navigation bar.
• Click the "General Preferences" link.
• Go to the paragraph titled Messages and Locate the Show Headers heading and select "All."
• Click the "Save" button to put your new settings into effect.
Once this setting is saved, go back and open your email and you should view the headers

Gmail

1. Log into your Gmail Account
2. open the Email whose headers you want to view
3. Click on the more options link in the message next to the date of the email. If the link says hide options then do not worry u have already
clicked on the more options link.
4. Now click the link called show original.
5. This will bring up a new window
with headers and the body of the message.
Thunderbird (Firefox – Mozilla)
To view email headers,
Go to "View"
Then go to Headers
and select "All" to view email headers

What is an I.P. Address?

Each computer on the Internet has an IP address that uniquely identifies it from all other computers on the Internet. When you send or receive data, the message gets divided into little chunks called packets. Each of these packets contains both the sender’s Internet address and the receiver’s address. And is sent first to a gateway computer (which is normally a networking device named router) that understands a small part of the Internet. The gateway computer reads the destination address and forwards the packet to an adjacent gateway that in turn reads the destination address and so forth across the Internet until one gateway recognizes the packet as belonging to a computer within its immediate neighborhood or domain that gateway then forwards the packet directly to the computer whose address is specified.

IP stands for Internet protocol, and these addresses are 32-bit numbers, normally expressed as 4 "octets" in a "dotted decimal number." A typical IP address looks like this:

The four numbers in an IP address are called octets, .

Every machine on the Internet has a unique IP address. A server has a static IP address that does not change very often. A home machine that is dialing up through a modem often has an IP address that is assigned by the ISP when you dial in. That IP address is unique for your session—it may be different the next time you dial in. This way, an ISP only needs one IP address for each modem it supports, rather than for each customer.



To control rising incidents of cybercrimes in Uttar Pradesh, the Lucknow Police have constituted a specialised ‘Anti- Cyber Crime Cell’ here.
The Cell will track and investigate cases of online frauds involving bank accounts, credit/debit cards, security password hacking and even dissemination of obscene literature over the web.
It will operate out of the camp office of Lucknow DIG/Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP).
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Amit Pathak has been made the nodal officer of the Cell, which will initially have 5 other cops.
